Christy Brown, 33, had pleaded guilty as charged in August to three counts of forcible sexual abuse, all second-degree felonies.
Each count is punishable by up to 15 years in prison, but 3rd District Judge Stephen Henriod sentenced Brown to 36 months' probation, a $1,850 fine and sex-offender treatment.
The judge said she could complete her probation in Texas, where she now lives.
Defense attorney Walter Bugden argued against jail time for Brown, but prosecutor Paul Parker argued she should serve 120 days in jail.
In a letter to the judge, the student's father said jail time would not help his son, who feels responsible for much of what occurred, according to Parker. Parker said the boy's father also took pity on Brown because of her low self-esteem.
The judge noted Brown had already suffered the loss of her job and career, and he was unsure what jail time would accomplish, according to Parker.
According to charging documents. Brown had sexual relations with the boy - who was 17 and one of her English students - on at least three occasions between April 8 and July 8.
She was arrested early on July 8 after a West Valley City police officer found her and the student parked near 2900 South and 5600 West.
Brown, who taught for two years at the high school, quit her job on June 1 because she planned on moving to Houston for a new teaching job, according to school officials.
Mike Frasier, executive director of Human Resources for Granite School District, said the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission had revoked Brown's teaching license, and school officials in Texas would have been notified of that action.
