The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Al Gore, as well as to the IPCC, signifies a strong consensus among responsible members of the international community that global warming is the moral imperative of our time. Urgent, effective action as called for by Gore, the IPCC, and many others throughout the world needs to be taken by everyone to effectively combat climate change. Our actions must include advocacy for a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants and a commitment to replace existing plants with clean, renewable sources of energy.- Rocky Anderson,

Salt Lake City mayor

[Al Gore] has led a tremendous fight to convince people that not only is there global warming, but it's caused by human action. . . . But nobody should forget there are top scientists who dispute that argument.

- Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who said he believes the Earth may be warming, but it may be a natural, cyclical event

We're thrilled, so pleased and proud. Vice President Gore has been such a leader bringing this critical issue before the public and backing it with the strongest science. It's just been amazing what he's been able to accomplish.

- Marc Heileson, Utah chapter of the Sierra Club

Global warming is a huge and complex issue that affects almost every aspect of people's lives. What this award for Gore will do is strengthen the already rising understanding by the public that it is a real phenomenon. He presented it in ways that were understandable to the nontechnical public.

- Frederic Wagner, Utah State University emeritus professor in the College of Natural Resources' Wildland Resources Department and participant in the U.S. Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change, Rocky Mountain and Great Basin Region

All I can say is, thank heavens he invented the Internet first, so there was a place to read about the news of his latest achievement.

- Scott Parker, chief of staff to Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah

There is an international consensus today that climate change is real and should be addressed. The Nobel award is recognition of the work Al Gore has done to educate the world about this issue.
