Dust off the city's unwelcome mat

Tedious property squabbles, visits from the Scouts and other mundane matters dominate the discussion during the weekly public hearings for Salt Lake City Council.

But one of the regulars spiced things up this week when he dumped on President Bush, just a few feet from Mayor Rocky Anderson.

"Would you pass word to President Bush and Vice President Cheney that they are not welcome in Salt Lake City," capital resident Doug Cotant begged the City Council.

The request came days after Cheney joined conservative activists for a private Council for National Policy conclave in Utah's capital.

"Hasn't that message already been sent?" Councilman Eric Jergensen quipped, smiling in the direction of the Bush-bashing mayor.

Rocky paused for effect, then swaggered a wry smile.

"We welcome them every opportunity we get, Doug."
