Want to vote? Now you can sign up online. Salt Lake County has launched an online-registration program that allows prospective voters to create, or change, their records electronically at www.clerk.slco.org.

Clerk Sherrie Swensen called it "convenient" for county residents, and a time saver for members of her staff, who previously had to retype applicants' voter-registration information.

The registration form is available online by clicking on the "Register to vote" link on the clerk's home page.

Prospective voters then must insert their name, address, birth date and other identifying information - on a secure server, by the way - and click "Submit." An electronic copy is sent to the county clerk, while a PDF version will appear on the applicant's screen.

To complete the registration process in advance of the Nov. 6 general election, the voter must print the application form, sign it and mail it to the county offices no later than Oct. 9.

Applicants also may submit the form in person until Oct. 22 - 15 days before the election.

"Because an original signature is required," Swensen said, "the registration can only be activated once the signed form is received and verified by the Clerk's Office."

This general election will include the Salt Lake City mayoral race, council races throughout the county, a statewide referendum on vouchers and proposed splits of the Jordan School District on the east side and in West Jordan. - Jeremiah Stettler
