The town of Sigurd lost its mayor this week after his pickup rolled off an embankment and into the Sevier River. Jeffrey Scott Anderson, 39, was towing a trailer with two tons of hay Monday morning on Black Knolls Road about one mile south of Sigurd when the Dodge pickup left the roadway, crossed a field of sagebrush about 500 feet wide and crashed down an embankment about 20 feet deep, Sevier County sheriff's deputies said. Anderson was ejected and found in the river outside the truck, deputies said. Investigators do not know what caused Anderson to leave the roadway, or why he did not stop. There was no evidence he tried to apply brakes, said Sgt. Tom Jensen. Autopsy results are pending, he said. Anderson was transporting hay to feed his cows, Jensen said. - Erin Alberty
