The City Council on Tuesday quashed a demolition moratorium in the Sugar House business district.

Councilman Soren Simonsen had proposed a six-month ban on tearing down and significantly renovating projects in the area while the city completes a historic building inventory that is currently under way.

Simonsen argued the city needs to stop demolition until it identifies all historic structures and can enact some type of preservation mechanism, such as a historic district.

Also on Tuesday, the LDS Church discussed its request to buy a number of below-ground property rights on public streets so it can expand entrances and exits into underground parking lots for its planned City Creek Center.

The City Council will review the request Sept. 18. The downtown mall redevelopment project is being handled by the church-owned company City Creek Reserve Inc., which was formerly part of Property Reserve Inc.
