Nominees for judge posts selected

A state commission has selected several nominees to replace two state judges.

Three nominees are in the running to replace 1st District Judge Gordon Low, who will retire effective Aug. 31.

The nominees are: Kevin J. Fife, Logan, with the law firm of Olson and Hoggan; Stephen W. Jewell, Logan, a self-employed attorney; John K. West, Salt Lake City, of the Salt Lake Legal Defenders Association.

The 1st Judicial District comprises Box Elder, Cache, and Rich counties.

A 10-day public comment period will be held before the names are submitted to Gov. Jon Huntsman.

First District Nominating Commission Chair Gary Anderson is accepting written comments regarding the nominees at the Administrative Office of the Courts, P.O. Box 140241, Salt Lake City, UT, 84114-0241. The deadline for written comments is 5 p.m. on Sept. 6.

Five nominees are in the running to replace 2nd District Judge Darwin Hansen, who is retiring Dec. 31.

The nominees are: David M. Connors, Farmington, of Chapman and Cutler; Sandra L. Corp, Huntsville, a deputy Weber County attorney; Michael D. DiReda, Kaysville, a deputy Davis County attorney; Robert B. Lochhead, Kaysville, of Parr, Waddoups, Brown, Gee & Loveless; Christina Schmutz, North Salt Lake, of Parsons, Behle and Latimer.

The 2nd Judicial District comprises Davis, Morgan, and Weber counties.

A 10-day public comment period will be held before the names are submitted to Gov. Jon Huntsman.

Comments can be sent to 2nd District Nominating Commission Chair Robert L. Stott by writing to the Administrative Office of the Courts, P.O. Box 140241, Salt Lake City, UT, 84114-0241. The deadline is 5 p.m. on Sept. 7.

The commission may request further interviews or an investigation of the nominees after reviewing public comments. After the public comment period, the names will be sent to the governor who has 30 days to select a candidate. The governor's nominee is then forwarded to the Senate Confirmation Committee, which reviews the nominee's qualifications and conducts a public hearing and interview session.

The Senate Confirmation Committee will forward the final nominee to the State Senate, which has 60 days from the governor's nomination to confirm the nominee.
