Rural Utah could be a big loser if the United States fails to develop new forms of energy, a high-ranking Bush administration official warned Thursday.

"If you live in a city and get a salary, maybe you could afford [increased] energy costs," Stephen Allred, assistant Interior secretary for land and minerals management, told audience members at the Utah Rural Summit. "My concern is rural America, where it could have a huge impact."

Allred said the nation needs to pursue traditional and nontraditional energy avenues or else skyrocketing costs could devastate farm operations and other rural operations.
