Uninsured? Can't afford a visit to the doctor? Free health care - immunizations, physical exams, women's cancer screenings, HIV and diabetes testing, and eye and dental exams - are being offered Friday and Saturday at the 15th annual CARE Fair.

Sponsored by the Junior League of Salt Lake City, the two-day event is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on both days. More than 300 medical volunteers expect to treat 3,300 people at the Horizonte Instructional & Training Center, at 1234 S. Main Street in Salt Lake City.

What started as a small affair offering limited services to 300 people in 1993 has steadily grown in scope and size, say Utah health officials, who blame soaring health care costs and growing ranks of uninsured. In 2006, more than 300,000 Utahns had no health insurance.

The fair is strategically held prior to the new school year, offering families proof of immunization for their children. Advocates will be on hand to help people apply for state aid, including Medicaid, food stamps and cash assistance.

Free child care will be provided and there will be drawings for car seats and bike helmets. For more information, visit www.jlslc.org or call the Junior League hotline at 801-355-1868.
