Penchant for Potter parties? Take your pick

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be celebrated by libraries and bookstores with parties and contests. Here's a list of Potter parties today and Saturday:

Salt Lake County

* Discovery Gateway, 444 W. 100 South, Salt Lake City, Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wand-making, Sorting Hat, charms, potions and herbology classes; $8.50, free for children under 1.

* Redwood Road Center, 3060 S. Redwood Road, Taylorsville, 5:30-8:30 p.m. The main event is a Muggles Chess Tournament for children 5-16, but there will also be refreshments and trophy prizes; $10. For more information, visit www.utahchess.com.

* Main Library, 210 E. 400 South, Salt Lake City, 6 p.m. to midnight. Activities include earth-bound Quidditch; classes on herbology, potions, defense against the dark arts, charms and the history of magic; face-painting; fortune tellers; wand-decorating; fantasy writing workshops; and an astronomy class taught by the University of Utah's Astronomical Society. * Hastings Books, 340 E. 525 North, Salt Lake City, 7 p.m. to midnight. Magician Christopher Fair will perform and there will be a Golden Snitch hunt, costume contests for adults and children, wand-making, refreshments and prizes. Free. Call 801-399-2090 for details.

* University of Utah Bookstore, 270 S. 1500 East, Salt Lake City, 10 p.m. to midnight. People will be sorted into different houses as they arrive. Other activities will include wand-making, a Diagon Alley replica, Harry Potter video games, trivia contests, indoor Quidditch, face-painting and a coloring contest. Free. * The King's English Bookshop, 1511 S. 1500 East, Salt Lake City, 10 p.m. to midnight. Activities include the Sorting Hat, wand-making, face-painting, fortune-telling, magic shows and snacks at the Leaky Cauldron. Admission is $5, or free with every Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows purchase.

Elsewhere

* Borders, 132 E. Winchester, Murray, and 4801 N. University Ave. Provo, 9:30 p.m. to midnight. Wizardly activities, games and giveaways. Free.

* Brigham Young University Bookstore, Wilkinson Student Center, Provo, 10 p.m. to midnight. Costume contest, wand-making, life-size Hagrid, the Sorting Hat, games, puzzles and more. Free.

* Utah State University Bookstore, Logan, 10:30 p.m. to midnight. Costume party, food, trivia with prizes and more. Free. For more information, 435-797-3950.

* All Barnes and Noble locations. Costume contests, wand-making, face-painting and other Potter-related activities will lead up to the book release at 12:01 a.m. Starting times vary; contact your local Barnes and Noble for details.
