Tamara Goetz has been named as the state's new science adviser, according to the Governor's Office of Economic Development.

Goetz headed Salt Lake Community College's Biotechnology Program and helped create educational materials for students. She also led InnovaBio, a nonprofit research company that provided internships in the life sciences for high school and college students, according to a news release.

"Her acceptance within the science community will enhance Utah's position as being a state of innovative thinkers and will open new doors for Utah companies working in the science and high-tech industries," said Jason Perry, GOED's executive director, in a news statement.

Goetz replaces Gregory Jones, who had held the advisory post since 2005.
