Over a dozen Utah sites will be among the more than 10,000 participating in Live Earth today in 129 countries.

Leanne D'Andrea of the Holladay area and Lee Anne Walker of Cottonwood Heights expect up to 30 guests at an evening house party to raise awareness about climate change.

D'Andrea signed up through former Vice President Al Gore's Web site. Walker connected through the moveon.org organization that revolutionized political activism beginning with the 2004 election.

Participants of these "mini town meetings" will take a pledge to become more carbon-neutral and swap ideas about cutting consumption, said D'Andrea.

"I think people want to know there are other like-minded individuals out there," she added. "The main reason we're doing this is to support each other."

Walker, who has a history of political activism tracing back to the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment, will bring postcards for participants to use for writing to lawmakers. She's been involved with moveon.org since before the 2004 political season.

Events like Live Earth show how the people sometimes need to lead politicians to the right policies, she said.

"That's what I think I'm doing," Walker said. "I'm changing the world right here from my computer."

Other events are scheduled from St. George, to Moab and Ogden. House parties also are scheduled in Sandy, Provo and Mapleton.
