WASHINGTON - President Bush has nominated Utahn Scott Burns to be deputy drug czar, a promotion that would put the former Iron County prosecutor in a leading spot to direct anti-drug policy.
Burns has served as the deputy director for state and national affairs for the Office of National Drug Control Policy since 2002 and on Tuesday, Bush announced plans to move him up to a sub-Cabinet position. Burns will now work directly under the drug czar, John P. Walters.
Walters said in a statement that Burns has criss-crossed the nation and the world promoting the president's drug-control strategy.
"His wide-ranging experience and knowledge regarding drug policy will contribute greatly to our ability to coordinate federal, state and local efforts that help make our national drug problem smaller," Walters said. - Thomas Burr
