Posted: 8:54 AM- LOGAN - Utah Public Radio will shut down regular programming on its Web stream to protest music royalties for Internet radio.

Across the country, radio stations and Webcasters are participating in a "day of silence."

UPR general manager Cathy Ives says the event is intended to increase public knowledge about the high costs set by the Copyright Royalty Board.

In place of its usual news, information and programming, http://www.upr.org will stream an announcement that informs listeners about the costs.

At issue is a switch in the way royalty payments are calculated when music is streamed on the Internet. Currently, stations pay by the song. The new rules would have them pay by the number of listeners accessing the music.
