The U.S. Department of Energy has named Salt Lake City among 13 cities nationally to share $2.5 million to increase the use of solar power.

The Solar American Cities program, according to a statement Wednesday by Department of Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman, is aimed at helping cities integrate solar technologies into energy planning and zoning and to streamline regulations.

It also seeks to promote solar technology to residents and businesses.

Cities were selected based on their commitment to a comprehensive approach to the deployment of solar technology.

Bodman made the announcement at the Renewable Energy Finance Forum in New York City, sponsored by the American Council on Renewable Energy.

Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, congratulated Salt Lake City for promoting solar technologies.

"This program underscores the commitment all levels of government should have to pursue new and innovative ways to meet our growing energy needs," he said. "And I'm happy to see that Utah is a part of it."

The funds will help streamline the technology's growth
