West Valley City will launch its second annual voter-outreach campaign, "Be Heard, Vote!," this week at the city's annual WestFest celebration.

Only 13 percent of registered voters participated in the 2005 West Valley City general election, according to a city press release. The city of more than 120,000 people has 44,370 registered voters.

"In the past, voter turnout for municipal elections has been pathetic," city recorder Sheri McKendrick said in a statement. "One vote really does matter on the city level. Elections have been won and lost by one vote in West Valley City."

McKendrick's office will be distributing brochures and posters on how to run for office, register to vote and vote as an absentee. For more information, call 801-963-3203.

WestFest - it features art, music, food and entertainment - runs Thursday through Sunday at Centennial Park, 5145 W. 3100 South.
