A Centerville police sergeant has quit after being charged today with three felonies stemming from a domestic dispute at his Layton home early Saturday.

Sgt. John Spencer is accused of assaulting his wife and her 5-year-old daughter. The Davis County district attorney's office charged him with second-degree felony child abuse, third-degree felony aggravated assault, third-degree domestic violence in the presence of a child and misdemeanor interrupting a telecommunication device.

Police said Spencer also broke telephones in the house to keep his wife from calling for help.

Layton police arrested Spencer on Saturday after the fight and booked him in Davis County jail. He posted a $7,500 bail Sunday.

Spencer, a 16-year veteran of the Centerville Police Department, resigned today, Chief Neal Worsley confirmed.

Worsley said he was aware Spencer was having marital problems but past disputes had not warranted criminal charges.

"Any time you've got a police officer that goes beyond where he should be going, it's shocking for us," Worsley said.
