WASHINGTON - A Senate committee will take up a measure to give Utah a fourth congressional seat next week and Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. may testify before the panel to push the legislation.

The Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee will hold a hearing May 15 on the bill that is primarily geared to give the District of Columbia its first full-voting member of Congress. Republican-dominated Utah was added to the bill to provide a political balance to the likely Democratic district seat.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., is the chairman of the committee and the bill's sponsor along with Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. Huntsman's office said the governor has been invited to testify but it was unclear Tuesday whether he would make an appearance.

A similar version of the bill passed the House last month, though President Bush's advisers have recommended he veto the measure out of constitutional concerns.
