OGDEN - A private foundation will build a police training facility in Weber County.

The Swanson Family Foundation hopes to attract officers from across the country to 18 acres in a county-owned industrial park.

Swanson Tactical Training Center will have outdoor shooting ranges, a combative skills studio and replica buildings for simulated SWAT training, including a home, motel, bank, jail cell, convenience store and school. The foundation was established in 1977 by the late Walter C. Swanson, a podiatrist.

''This state-of-the-art facility will bring a lot of people to our county,'' said Weber County Commissioner Craig Dearden, a former director of the Utah Department of Public Safety. ''There is not another one, that isn't federal, in the western United States.''

The county sheriff's office will get free use at first.

''It will allow us to be better prepared for any kind of emergency situation,'' Sheriff Brad Slater said.
