PROVO - Today is the day of reckoning for the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church building at 172 N. 500 West.

The Provo City Council will decide the fate of the decades-old structure when it considers a resolution to remove it from the city's landmark register. The removal would allow the parish to sell the lot to a developer who plans to tear down the building.

Preservationists, meanwhile, are trying to save the Spanish mission-style church house and have made an offer to buy it.

City Council Chairman George Stewart said the council will vote to take the church off the register if the preservationists' purchase offer isn't satisfactory to the parish.

The Historic Provo Preservation Foundation will issue a statement prior to today's City Council meeting, according to member Linda Walton.

The St. Francis of Assisi parish, which has been in the area for more than 100 years, abandoned the run-down church in 2000, and its members are now worshipping in an Orem gym.

They would like to sell so they can afford to build a new house of worship in Orem.
