The Utah State Board of Regents Executive Committee on Monday approved a tier-two tuition increase of 3 percent for Utah State University students next year. The board on March 9 postponed a decision on the matter until Monday to allow Logan-based USU more time to complete truth-in-taxation hearings on campus.
The 3 percent tier-two increase brings USU's total tuition increase to 7 percent, or $236 a year for students taking classes worth 15 credit hours. During the March 9 meeting, regents approved a 4 percent base, or tier-one tuition increase for all nine higher education institutions in the state, including USU. Tier-two tuition increases for all the other schools also were approved last month.
Tier-one tuition increases pay for the salaries of Utah's faculty and staff. Individual schools add tier-two increases to pay for specific programs.
Students at the University of Utah face the largest tuition increase next year. They will pay $298 more per year, an increase of 7.5 percent.
