Boy Scouts in the Salt Lake Valley collected nearly a half-million pounds of food Saturday in the state's largest one-day food drive. The weekend collection generated 430,000 pounds of food for the Utah Food Bank in the Salt Lake Valley alone, according to food bank spokesman Jeff Golden. Donations probably will reach a million pounds once other parts of the state - which typically double Salt Lake's collection - are included, he said. Thousands of Boy Scouts combed Utah's neighborhoods Saturday to collect nonperishable items such as rice, beans, tuna and peanut butter that residents had left on their doorsteps the day before. The donations were directed to the Utah Food Bank, which provides food to more than 240 agencies and humanitarian programs in the state. - Jeremiah Stettler
