FARMINGTON - Davis County's expanded jail - it opened for business at the beginning of March - is fully staffed, except for 10 corrections clerks.

County Personnel Director Steve Baker said that 36 sworn correctional officers have been hired. Of the 46 clerk openings - those are unsworn positions - 39 signed on and three recently resigned.

"The work was not quite what they envisioned," Baker said of those who left.

The full-time job, which starts at $10.98 per hour, involves running the jail's control rooms and the intake and booking of new inmates. It requires a high school diploma and at least one year of full-time work experience.

The hours and pay are good, claimed Baker.

"But no one really grows up saying they want to work in a jail."

Earlier advertising drew about 80 applications for the correctional clerk positions.

"We're not taking any more applications until we get through what we've got," Baker said.

About 180 workers keep the 776-bed correctional facility running 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"We have a lot of great employees down there, so we're happy," Baker said.
