The Utah Legislature has 104 members: 75 in the House and 29 in the Senate. Both chambers are dominated by Republicans, who outnumber Democrats 55 to 20 in the House and 21 to 8 in the Senate.

It requires 38 votes to pass a bill in the House and 15 in the Senate.

During the 2007 Legislature, about 800 bills have been introduced and, as of Friday, just over 200 had passed.

The Constitution requires the Legislature to meet for 45 calendar days, beginning on the third Monday in January, Martin Luther King Jr. That may change with a proposed constitutional amendment to move it to the fourth Monday in January.

This year the Legislature will end Feb. 28. Lawmakers usually work right up until midnight.

The governor then has 20 days to sign or veto bills, or to allow them to become law without his signature.
