Dillard's at City Creek?

The LDS Church has left a spot for a third, unnamed department store to anchor its City Creek Center in downtown Salt Lake City.

Could it be Dillard's?

Mark Gibbons, president of the church's Property Reserve Inc., dropped the name Wednesday night during a Planning Commission meeting.

After the meeting, he said he “misspoke,” adding that the site slated for a third anchor on Main Street near 100 South is commonly referred to as the Dillard's spot.

“We have made no announcement of any other department store,” Gibbons stressed.

But he didn't rule out that Dillard's is a possibility, saying the church's retail partner, Taubman Centers Inc., is in charge of negotiations. “We have no comment on those negotiations," Gibbons said.

Dillard's wouldn't be a stretch. Taubman has used it to anchor five of its malls: International Plaza in Florida, MacArthur Center in Virginia, Northlake Mall in North Carolina, Stony Point Fashion Park in Virginia and The Shops at Willow Bend in Texas.

Dillard's operates 329 stores in 29 states, including six in Utah at the Cache Valley Mall in Logan, Fashion Place Mall in Murray, Newgate Mall in Ogden, Provo Towne Centre, South Towne Center in Sandy and Red Cliffs Mall in St. George.

Adding a seventh Dillard's to the market won't please some shoppers, who have wanted retailers new to Utah, such as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and even Saks Fifth Avenue.

In other news, Gibbons said the church will ask local architects to propose designs for the sky bridge the church wants to build across Main Street. City officials are still deciding if they will allow the span.
