The Utah Food Bank, among the state's most prominent not-for- profits, ships tons of grocery items each year to food pantries throughout state. But the charity is short this year on volunteers.
"When people think of the food bank, they often think just of food," said the charity's development director Cathy Green. "But there are other ways to help."
About 500 volunteers are needed from now until the first snow to do light yard work for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Help is needed to rake leaves, trim bushes, pull weeds and perform other chores.
Last year, volunteers performed nearly 4,000 chore services, completed 3,596 home repairs and delivered 9,046 food boxes at no charge to Services for Seniors clients.
During the charity's annual fall leaf haul - held this year on Saturday, Nov. 4 - volunteers spruce up 250 yards in one fell swoop.
