James Evans refuses to be outdone.

The day Salt Lake County's GOP boss learned a law professor had called for a probe into alleged "proxy" campaign contributions in the district attorney's race, Evans lobbied for a second investigation - geared at the Democrat.

Evans' letter alleges that Democratic DA hopeful Sim Gill "intentionally" hid employer or occupation listings on his campaign disclosures, delaying scrutiny of his donor sources.

"Technically, we got him," Evans said. "If they want to take these potshots, we'll proceed."

Evans referred to the letter from John Flynn calling on the Attorney General's Office to investigate Republican DA candidate Lohra Miller for accepting $24,000 generated from a developer through his employees.

Gill denies any wrongdoing - "We submitted it [the disclosure forms]. We got a notice from them. We corrected it," he said - and notes 10 county candidates omitted employers or occupation on their forms.

Jason Yocom, chief deputy clerk and a Gill donor, says the 10 were an even split from each party. He notes those in violation filed paper forms, which he says had confusing instructions, while each candidate who filed online was in compliance. Evans dismisses Gill's quick fix.

"That is akin to taking the money back after the bank robbery," Evans wrote in his letter.
