Ogden's gain is Salt Lake City's loss.

Utah's capital wanted to be the next U.S. headquarters of Amer Sports Corp., a ski-equipment company. Instead, Amer Sports chose Ogden - despite a larger subsidy offered by Salt Lake City.

Amer Sports announced this week that Ogden would become its U.S. headquarters for its Salomon, Atomic and Suunto brands. The state is giving Amer Sports almost $8 million in subsidies. And Ogden reportedly will shell out $4.2 million.

Salt Lake City Councilman Carlton Christensen said his city was prepared to offer more, though he wouldn't divulge the amount, noting only that it was "slightly" higher.

Clearly disappointed, Christensen said he was glad the company is coming to Utah. Amer Sports will invest $3 million into downtown Ogden and bring some 230 new jobs.

Jeff Edwards, president of the Economic Development Corp. of Utah, said Ogden beat out Salt Lake City because the smaller city already has landed seven other skiing-related companies in its bid to become a recreational powerhouse.
