A Salt Lake County prosecutor was charged Monday in Salt Lake City's justice court with one count of class B misdemeanor driving under the influence. Jon David Shuman, 43, was cited by police after he was stopped at a DUI checkpoint Aug. 6. Salt Lake City Prosecutor Simarjit Gill said the formal charge resulted from further investigation by his office, which screens all potential DUI cases to be sure of the supporting evidence and to search for prior DUI convictions. No court date has been set. Deputy Salt Lake County District Attorney Robert Stott had no comment Monday other than to say that Shuman's status as a criminal prosecutor has remained unchanged. According to a police report, an officer noticed a "strong odor of alcohol" coming from Shuman, who had "glassy red eyes" and "moved really slow" when asked for his driver license, registration and proof of insurance. When Shuman refused to perform field sobriety and breath tests, police arrested him, took his driver license, impounded his car and then released him to a friend. A 2002 graduate of the University of Utah's S.J. Quinney College of Law, Shuman has worked for the Salt Lake County DA's office for the last couple of years.
