NORTH SALT LAKE - The state Department of Transportation has started work on another northbound lane on Interstate 15 from U.S. 89 to Interstate 215 to help ease the crush of the evening commute from Salt Lake City.

The 2-mile-long project will cost about $3.4 million.

''This project is a top priority for the department due to the heavy traffic in the area,'' said UDOT Executive Director John Njord. ''By adding the additional lane, congestion will be eased for northbound motorists.''

The new lane should be finished by late November.

Three lanes of traffic will be maintained on that section of I-15 during peak traffic hours and restricted to two lanes at other times.

In the spring, UDOT also will add sound-muffling walls on the east side of the interstate to help minimize noise affecting nearby condominiums and townhouses.
