Shanna Schaefermeyer, a retired community college teacher and administrator, was appointed Tuesday night as North Salt Lake's new mayor. Schaefermeyer, who served on the City Council from 1984 to 1992, will replace Mayor Kay Briggs, who is being transferred to the Dominican Republic for his job. Schaefermeyer, 55, was formally appointed in a public vote Tuesday, although the council had decided on her in a closed session last month. The council initially thought it need not make the decision in a public meeting but later realized that a public vote is required by Utah law. Six others were vying for the seat, including two current council members and a former mayor. Schaefermeyer, who has a master's degree in education from the University of Utah, spent 14 years as a teacher and administrator at Salt Lake Community College. She is to serve as mayor until November 2007. Briggs is moving to the Dominican Republic, where he oversees business affairs throughout the Caribbean for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. - Kristen Moulton
