Who said a sense of civic responsibility is passé? In Ogden, no fewer than 39 people have told the City Council they want to fill a vacant position on the council, according to a news release Tuesday. The at-large seat is open because Bill Glasmann, elected last fall, has resigned to work in the city's community-development office. Among those interested in the job are Ken Alford, former council chairman; Gloria Berrett, fired last winter as city recorder; Jeremy Taylor, former airport manager and a member of the Civil Service Commission; Robert Hunter, who lost to Mayor Matthew Godfrey in the mayor's first election; Shalae Larsen a former city planning commissioner whom Godfrey did not reappoint; Ogden School Board member John Gullo, and a number of Weber State University professors. Robert Geiger, a leader in the group Lift Ogden, which promotes a gondola and hillside project, and Sandra Crosland, a prominent member of Smart Growth Ogden, which opposes the urban gondola, also submitted their names. The council will review each application and interview applicants in a special open meeting on Sept. 20, the news release said. Five finalists will be interviewed at a Sept. 27 meeting, and one will be chosen that night. The new council member will serve until the next municipal election in November 2007. The council identified other candidates as: Christopher Bentley, H. Laine Berghout, Gloria J. Berrett, Justin Bonyai, Karen R. Burton, Rex Kirk Butterfield, Melissa S. Checketts, Steve Conlin, Sonia Cunningham, Bryan S. Dorsey, J. Brad Florence, Robert W. Foxley, Gaylord W. Gardner, Jocelyn "Jock" Glidden, Therese Grijalva and Landon Gail Halverson. Also seeking the seat are John L. Hampton, Trevor Hansen, David Harding Haun, Rhod Hawk, Scott M. Heiner, Travis R. Marker, John Gardner Moon, William R. Ormond, Don L. Owens, Sandra Naisbitt Rowell, Lisa D. Schultz, David Smith, Jeremy Taylor, John H. Thompson, Susan E. Van Hooser, Steven R. Wallerstein and Dian C. Woodhouse. - Kristen Moulton
