Former Gov. Norman Bangerter had served as chairman since the school's establishment in 2001.
In a letter to trustees, Bangerter wrote that ''the time has come to step aside and allow others the opportunity to serve.''
During Bangerter's term as chairman, UCAT has established itself as Utah's 10th public institution of higher education among the colleges and universities governed by the Utah Board of Regents.
Douglas Holmes, board of trustees vice chairman, will assume board leadership until a new chairman is elected by the trustees, likely during their Nov. 1 meeting.
The Utah College of Applied Technology consists of nine campuses serving more than 50,000 students statewide.
Its mission is to train students for the work force.
