A legislative special session, now expected next Tuesday, could cut taxes by about $76 million.
ä An estimated $46 million would go to benefit lower- and middle-income taxpayers by spreading brackets. About $30 million would relieve about 5 percent of taxpayers, mostly upper income, who, beginning in the 2007 tax year, could choose a flat tax of about 5.4 percent.
ä Also being pushed for the session is a change in state law to allow counties statewide to use sales tax increases to upgrade commuter trains, airports and roads.
