A 34-year-old Provo man died Wednesday evening when he apparently drove his pickup in an area off limits to vehicles in Slate Canyon, overturned the truck and dropped about 150 feet down an embankment.

The crash that killed Christopher Goins occurred just before 5 p.m. on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, Provo police Lt. Todd Grossgebauer said.

Provo police responded to the crash at 600 South Slate Canyon Drive, where they found Goins' truck upsidedown in a parking lot near the trail head. Goins was ejected and died before being taken to a hospital, Grossgebauer said.

It appears Goins drove his pickup around a rock barrier into an unauthorized area and drove up the hillside along some switchbacks where only hikers and bikers are allowed, Grossgebauer said.

The truck then slid off the edge of the mountain and overturned down a steep embankment before landing in the parking lot, Grossgebauer said.
