An armed man who tried to enter the LDS Church's downtown Salt Lake City parking facility was taken into custody and later admitted to a mental health facility for observation.
Salt Lake City police Sgt. Robin Snyder said the 30-year-old was stopped by Temple Square security officers when he attempted to drive into the restricted parking site about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. That was when officers noticed a pistol resting on the seat next to the man.
The man reportedly told the security officers that he wanted to speak to someone who was in church leadership.
Snyder said the man was "very compliant with officers' requests" to exit the vehicle and did not reach for the gun at any time. LDS security then called Salt Lake City police, who questioned the man and determined he needed a psychological evaluation.
The man, whose identity was not released, was committed to a minimum stay of 24 hours at University Hospital's mental health wing, Snyder said.
The gun was confiscated by police.
