Former Congressman Merrill Cook is scheduled to announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate today in Salt Lake City's Liberty Park.

Cook would join a bevy of Republicans challenging three-term incumbent Sen. Bob Bennett.

He said in a media notice late Wednesday that he will campaign on lower taxes, revitalizing industry and against gun control, illegal immigration, same-sex marriage and abortion.

Cook held Utah's 2nd Congressional District seat from 1997 to 2001. In the 2000 election, he was denied the Republican nomination and the GOP lost the seat to Democrat Jim Matheson, who has held the office ever since.
