A fundraiser to help the Salt Lake City-based John A. Moran Eye Center combat the treatable blindness problems besetting residents of the Himalayan mountains is scheduled for Saturday at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort.
"A Night for Sight: The Possibility of Eliminating Blindness In Our Lifetime," is the theme of the dinner and silent and live auctions co-sponsored by the Snowbird Renaissance Center and the Moran Eye Center's international division of ophthalmology.
The event will feature a presentation by Erik Weihenmayer, the only blind climber to reach the peak of Mount Everest in the Himalayas and the next-to-last torchbearer for the 2002 Salt Lake Paralympics. He handed the flame to Muffy Davis and Chris Waddell, who lit the cauldron for the Games for athletes with disabilities.
Also featured will be Geoffrey Tabin, a professor in the University of Utah department of ophthalmology and visual sciences and co-founder of the Himalayan Cataract Project. His picture appeared recently on the cover of National Geographic Adventure magazine, and a story focused on his humanitarian efforts.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Cliff Ballroom at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort. Tickets can be purchased for $75 a seat or $750 for a table of 10 on the Snowbird Renaissance Center's Web site, www.snowbirdrc.org.
Reservations also may be made by calling Amy Phillips at the Renaissance Center, 801-933-2112.
