A Weber County LDS youth leader has been arrested on suspicion of sexual abuse, and police believe there may be more victims.
Cory C. Campbell, 37, of Farr West, is accused of inappropriately touching three teenage girls, ages 14 and 15, said Weber County sheriff's Capt. Klint Anderson.
The alleged abuse happened at his home on the 2500 block of Remuda Drive and did not immediately appear to be related to his position as a leader of teenage boys with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Anderson said. The alleged abuse started in October. All three girls are friends, Anderson said.
The investigation started about two weeks ago when one of the girls reported it to her parents. Campbell was relieved of his church leadership role when the investigation began, Anderson said. Police quickly found the other two alleged victims and believe there may be more.
"We're still investigating because we don't think we've gotten to the bottom of everything," Anderson said. Anyone who wants to report possible abuse by Campbell can call Weber County police dispatch at 801-629-8221.
LDS Church spokesman Scott Trotter said the church has "a zero-tolerance policy for child abuse." If found guilty, Campbell will face church disciplinary action, regardless of whether the abuse happened in connection with his position, Trotter said.
"While we are unfamiliar with the facts uncovered by the police, it is our understanding that none of the abuse was related to any church service or activity," Trotter said in a statement. "Local church leaders will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities and will offer counseling and other resources to help the victims in their healing process."
Campbell was arrested Tuesday and posted a $30,000 bond and was released. He faces two counts of forcible sex abuse and two counts of sexual battery.
