The Sorenson Legacy Foundation has donated $833,000 toward a science education floor in Westminster College's new Meldrum Science Center, the four-story building nearing completion at the private Salt Lake City liberal arts college.

The center's third floor will be named in honor of the late James LeVoy Sorenson, a biomedical device innovator and Utah entrepreneur, and his wife, philanthropist Beverley Sorenson. It includes integrated laboratory/classrooms dedicated to genetics, microbiology, anatomy, physiology and undergraduate research, as well as faculty offices, a conference room and student lounge.

The 60,000-square-foot building, the capstone to the college's 10-year master plan, is scheduled for completion after two years of construction. Most of the project's $30 million cost was covered by a gift from Peter Meldrum, another Utah bioscience innovator.

The building was designed by VCBO Architects and is expected to achieve LEED gold certification, one of the highest green-building standards.
