A junior high school student was hospitalized in critical condition Monday morning when she was hit by a car on her way to school in Magna.

The crash occurred about 7 a.m. near 2700 South and 8500 West, said Unified Fire Authority Capt. Clint Smith.

The 14-year-old girl was walking north in a crosswalk on her way to Brockbank Junior High when a car traveling east struck her, Smith said. The girl suffered severe head injuries and was flown to University Hospital.

Unified Police Department Lt. Don Hutson said the car was traveling about 35 mph -- the posted speed limit -- when it hit the girl. The 20-year-old driver didn't brake and told investigators she did not see the girl, Hutson said.

The car's driver was not hurt. The UPD is investigating the cause of the crash. The driver of the car showed no obvious signs of impairment, Hutson said. There also was no sign of ice on the woman's windshield, but there was a bit of fog in the area, Hutson said.
