A Layton man found guilty of sexual abuse tried to attack the victim and her family in the courtroom Tuesday.

As the verdict was read against the 50-year-old man, he started to stare at the victim and her family, according to a written report by the bailiff, Davis County sheriff's Deputy Dave Grondel.

Then court clerk Vicki Leo told the bailiff to take the man into custody.

"The bailiff started to approach, and that's when he made the move toward the victim and everything went south," Leo said.

The man suddenly stood up, pushed his chair backward and lunged toward the deputy, according to the report. Then he moved toward the victim and her mother and other family members sitting in the front row. The girl's uncle, who was sitting next to her, grabbed the man's arm, and the girl's brother-in-law grabbed his other arm. Together, they pushed him backward toward the aisle. The bailiff and a law clerk jumped in to help take the man to the ground.

The man continued to fight, trying to flip the bailiff onto his back as he called for backup. A second sheriff's deputy helped Grondel put the man in handcuffs and he was taken back to jail.

"It was unnerving for everyone, I think," Leo said. "It's not something you want to happen very often."

The man is scheduled for a sentencing hearing in the sexual abuse case on March 18. He could face additional charges in the attempted attack, said Utah State Courts spokeswoman Nancy Volmer.

The girl's mother later said the man had threatened her and her daughter's lives if they ever reported the abuse.
