A man charged with first-degree felony murder of another man in Ogden made his first court appearance Wednesday.
During his initial appearance in 2nd District Court, Robert Lee McCullar was assigned a public defender and a scheduling hearing was set for Feb. 10 before Judge W. Brent West.
On Dec. 22, Marcelino Robles returned to his apartment after being out for several hours and found his brother Filiberto Robles Bedolla dead. An autopsy ruled he died of several stab wounds to the neck, charging documents state.
A tip from a confidential informant led Ogden police to McCullar, who they say was in the apartment earlier in the day with a prostitute.
Police recorded phone calls made between McCullar and the prostitute at the Weber County Jail. While he denied killing Bedolla in that conversation, when the woman asked McCullar what he thought could have happened, he replied "he should have never pushed a [expletive] that far."
In a covert surveillance of McCullar and the woman in a hotel room, police say the two talked openly about the murder, and that McCullar "admits to cutting open the throat of the victim with a piece of glass and murdering the victim," the charging document states.
McCullar faces a first-degree felony murder charge and a third-degree felony charge for possessing a weapon by a restricted person. McCullar previously was convicted of aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary, making him a convicted felon who is prohibited from possessing weapons.
