A 40-year-old man who arrived at a West Jordan Hospital early Wednesday morning was so severely beaten that doctors had to sedate him and are still trying to assess his injuries.

The man was at a home at 5148 W. Woodworth Dr. (about 7600 South) when police say a fight broke out between him and another man in the home. Apparently, a baseball bat was used. The victim attempted to drive himself to the hospital, but was hurt too badly to complete the drive. He called a friend who drove him to Jordan Valley Hospital, said Sgt. Drew Sanders of the West Jordan Police Department.

"I don't know why neither of them called police or the fire department," Sanders said. Hospital staff called the police after the man told them his injuries were caused by an assault.

The female witness who was at home at the time has "not been helpful," Sanders said. She told police she heard a scuffle but said nothing very serious had occurred.

"If that's true, how did this man sustain all these injuries?" Sanders said. Police are still trying to determine how the three know one another.

Police do not have a weapon in hand and they have made no arrests. However, they are working on getting a warrant for the suspect's arrest.

The victim is in serious condition but doctors say he is expected to recover, Sanders said.
