America Forever is a self-appointed anti-gay group that has sent thousands of unwanted faxes to businesses and individuals blasting the gay and lesbian community, taken out full-page ads to promote its agenda and has tried to convey an affiliation with the LDS Church, which the church rejects. Now the group has done it again.
In response to the Sundance documentary about the church's involvement in Prop. 8, California's anti-gay marriage initiative, America Forever sent out an unsolicited hate-spewing fax to an elementary school.
The fax, sent to Uintah Elementary School, contains the screaming banner headline "Another Hateful Attack on the LDS Church, Senator Chris Buttars, Gayle Ruzicka and Many More who have stood up to the homosexual movement."
Large-print headline underneath the banner said, "Shame on Sundance" and "Shame on Reed Cowan," the documentary's producer who caused a stir last year when he released demeaning statements that Buttars, R-West Jordan, made about gays and lesbians in an interview for the documentary.
Buttars later said he was tricked into making those statements.
America Forever seems to act on its own most of the time, without approval or even knowledge of those it proposes to be allies with.
The fax, in being sent to a public school, was received by a taxpayer-funded entity who had to pay for the privilege.
Gun contradictions in Utah » A Salt Lake County man and his two sons recently went to the gun show at the Expo Center in Sandy a couple of weeks ago and discovered an interesting twist in public gun policy.
The man and his oldest son purchased handguns at the show, but his youngest son, who is 19, was not allowed to buy a handgun because he was too young.
He went away happy, however. At another booth at the show, he was able to buy an AK-47.
Speaking of guns » The catalog that lists continuing education classes at Davis Applied Technology Center in Kaysville has a category called "Stress Relievers." The three classes designed to relieve stress are "Ballroom Dancing," "Cooking with Greg" and "Certified Class for Concealed Weapons Permit."
Separate but not equal » This is getting to be an annual tradition.
Many Boy Scout troops engage in a program in which they put out American flags in the neighborhood yards on national holidays.
Martin Luther King Day, for those who don't know, is a national holiday in honor of the martyred civil rights leader of the 1950s and '60s.
But once again, no American flags were placed in the neighborhoods of the East Millcreek area in Salt Lake County.
Not only do the Scouts in that area place the American flags in the neighborhood areas on other federal holidays, but they also place them on Pioneer Day, July 24, which is a state holiday.
