Salt Lake County's top prosecutor may have to defend herself.
Defense attorney and lifelong Democrat Greg Skordas announced Friday that he will run for Salt Lake County district attorney, challenging Republican Lohra Miller who plans to seek re-election.
"Now's the time to bring the necessary experience and change to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office," he wrote in a statement.
Skordas is no newcomer to the political arena. He ran unsuccessfully for Utah Attorney General in 2004 against Mark Shurtleff.
Skordas -- who earned his law degree from the University of Utah -- has practiced law for almost three decades in Utah. His career has included three years in the Legal Defender's Office, eight years in the D.A.'s Office and more than 15 years in private practice.
Now, he's ready to get back into public service as the county's prosecutor. He hopes to forge stronger relationships between the courts, prosecutors, defense attorneys and law enforcement, and to move the office toward a more "nuts-and-bolts approach" to crime fighting.
"The people of Salt Lake County," he wrote, "deserve to have legal representation based on sound judgment, thoughtful priorities and the proper use of resources."
