The Jazz could be down to just one point guard in Ronnie Price for tonight's game against Denver with Deron Williams missing the pregame shootaround and uncertain to play against the Nuggets as a result.
"If I have to play, I have to play," Price said. "This is a big game for us, a team that we need to get a win against. Hopefully, Deron will be all right and be able to suit up and play tonight, but if not, we've got to roll with what we've got."
After trading rookie point guard Eric Maynor to Oklahoma City on Dec. 22, the Jazz have been down to just two point guards in Williams and Price and playing with a 12-man roster that is one shy of the league minimum. Their numbers hadn't been a concern until now.
"We'll do the best we can," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "That's all you can do. It might not be as pretty, give us a few headaches, but that's all right."
The Jazz are expected to either sign or acquire a point guard in the coming days. Sloan was asked if the Jazz would make an emergency move to make sure they were covered at the position tonight.
"He'd be probably more confused than we are," Sloan said. "That'd probably be the biggest thing.
"Unless it's been somebody that's played with us or somebody that's been here and gone through training camp because we play kind of out of a system. It's not really a one-on-one type of deal. A lot [would] depend on who it was."
Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor wasn't at shootaround and didn't immediately return a message. The Jazz were not believed to have made a call about Utah Flash guard Dontell Jefferson's availability.
The Jazz trail the Nuggets by two games in the Northwest Division, having fallen out of the Western Conference's top eight after Thursday's loss to Oklahoma City. They are just 2-5 in the division and would fall to 0-2 against Denver with a loss tonight.
The Jazz could use Ronnie Brewer as an emergency point guard, as they did in a November game in Philadelphia with Price injured and Williams away from the team as his daughter was undergoing medical testing.
Price, meanwhile, played a season-high 22 minutes in Thursday's loss to Oklahoma City. He was asked if his previously injured foot would allow him to play heavy minutes tonight if necessary. "It's 100 percent good enough to play," Price answered.
Kyle Korver, meanwhile, will be in uniform after skipping the Jazz's two-game trip this week to continue to rehab his left knee. Korver said he worked daily with the Jazz's physical therapist, received an electroshock treatment and was feeling better.
As much as he feels a responsibility to play if healthy, Korver would like to break out of the cycle in which he plays a game, then has to miss time afterward because of his knee.
"I don't want to do this all season," Korver said. "But I feel like I'm at a point now where I can start playing hopefully every game - - I don't know how much. And maybe things will change - - I don't know - - but I'm going to try."
