The state Capitol is expected to teem Tuesday with hundreds of red-dressed conservatives rallying to take back a government they believe has been hijacked, event organizers say.
"I'm very passionate -- all of us are," said Jared Law, a Highland Republican who launched Utah's 9.12 project and helped organized the Code Red rally that is part of a nationwide effort that will take its message to the White House.
Law, a devotee of Glenn Beck who organized the national 9.12 project, said he fears the bloating of government and its crushing control over people's lives.
Law cited Copenhagen's climate talks as an example.
"They're starting to talk about population control," said Law, who identified himself as a God-fearing Christian. "Overpopulation is a code word for either killing people or preventing their birth in the first place."
U.S. Senate candidate Cherilyn Eagar, one of a handful of candidates who hope to pry the Republican nomination away from three-term incumbent Sen. Bob Bennett next year, will speak at the 11:15 a.m. gathering, along with state Reps. Craig Frank and Carl Wimmer.
Morgan Philpot, vice chairman of the state Republican Party, is also on the docket to speak at the morning and afternoon rallies.
Philpot -- who is exploring a possible run against Democrat Jim Matheson, now in his fifth term representing Utah's 2nd Congressional District -- said he plans to focus on the Bill of Rights.
While Philpot does not specifically intend to target any specific officeholders, he said the rallies cannot help but have an anti-incumbent flavor due to widespread discontent with government at all levels.
"What you'll see with this turnout is the desire that parties quit wrangling about power, control and incumbency," Philpot said, "and transcend partisan politics and start serving the better interests of the American people."
Right-wing radio talk-show host Laura Ingraham touted the Code Red Rallies as a chance to remind Democratic leaders that efforts to fix health care is "social engineering at its absolute worst."
