Mayor Ralph Becker is looking to lock up two new chunks of open space -- one in the foothills and one on the west side -- at a cost of $5,500.

The mayor is recommending the Salt Lake City Council approve the purchases of the so-called Alan Parsons parcel above Richland Drive in the north Bonneville area of the foothills near Parleys Canyon.

He also wants to secure property at the entrance to the 800 South Park at 850 S. and 1000 West. That space, known as Genessee, costs $5,000.

Both moves are backed by the city's Open Space Lands Advisory Board. The purchases would leave just under $3 million left in the city's open-space fund.

Property owners have agreed to the sales, although the final transactions must be approved by the council.

Most recently, the capital has secured the so-called H-Rock property, the 400 East Community Garden and Wasatch Hollow.
