Springdale » Zion National Park has installed solar power systems at the south and east entrance stations.
Park Superintendent Jock Whitworth says the 2-kilowatt systems provide half the electricity needed to run the stations. They are tied to the electrical grid to keep from having to use storage batteries.
The park has also received federal money to install solar photovoltaic systems at the administration building and the Kolob Canyons Visitor Center, along with adding more solar arrays at the emergency operations center. When the projects are finished, they will add 85 kilowatts of electricity for park facilities.
Whitworth says southern Utah's Zion park has an ideal solar location.
